Turtle Nest Monitoring 2024

As you may know, Friends of Sam Smith Park has joined up with the established and indigenous led Turtle protectors of High Park to form Turtle Protectors – Sam Smith Park.  We started our own programme protecting and monitoring Snapping Turtle nests in Sam Smith in 2023.  We were successful in safely helping nearly a hundred hatchlings on their perilous journey to the water in the wetland pond – good news for this species at risk!

If you wish to help out with the programme this year, please fill out the volunteer application at the link below ….

Upcoming Mandatory Training Dates:  Please save these dates

March 27th - Turtles 101

7pm to 8:30pm Online (Zoom)

This training is mandatory for all new volunteers.  Active volunteers who wish to have a refresher, are welcome to join.

All eight species of turtles living in Ontario are “at risk” provincially and federally. Join Turtle Protectors co-founders, Carolynne Crawley and Jenny Davis to learn about the threats turtles face and what you can do as a Turtle Protector to reconcile human impacts on turtles and their home. You will learn how to identify the most common turtles living in the city, where to best spot them and why they matter.

Please register:
