NEST BOX MAINTENANCE
Nest boxes are cleaned out, repaired or replaced and sanitized against parasites before winter. Sometimes we have to evict squatters! The entrance holes are covered until the swallows start arriving in late March the following year. This is done to stop non-migrating, early nesting House Sparrows from claiming the boxes before their arrival. Park visitors are asked not to remove the covers until there are enough swallow pairs in the field to fight off the heavier and more aggressive sparrows.
