ABOUT US

MISSION STATEMENT

A community group of local residents and park users dedicated to protecting, enhancing and promoting the unique habitats and biodiversity of Colonel Samuel Smith Park in South Etobicoke, Ontario.

Colonel Samuel Smith Park, at the south end of Kipling Avenue, is situated on the Etobicoke waterfront. The park not only provides a quiet green space for long walks and quiet contemplation for people, but it also serves as a resting ground during both spring and fall migrations for a myriad of bird species. A variety of reptiles, mammals and fish also call the park home.

The Friends of Sam Smith Park (FOSS) are a band of volunteers consisting of both local residents and park visitors whose mission is “dedicated to protecting, enhancing and promoting the unique habitats and biodiversity” of the park. For additional information, refer to the park’s Facebook and Instagram pages as well as our web site at <<friendsofsamsmithpark.ca>>.

Throughout each year FOSS engages in a variety of projects that both protect and promote this urban oasis. Many events are held in conjunction with other like-minded organizations. Such activities (details available on the FOSS web page) include:

  • The Spring Bird Festival in May

  • Red-necked Grebe Nesting Platforms

  • The Swallow Field

  • Annual Pumpkin Parade

  • Winter Bird Feeder Project

  • Whimbrel Watch

  • Planting of Native Species

  • Turtle Monitoring Project

  • Annual Park Clean-up

  • Holiday Market at Humber College

  • Photo Exhibitions at Humber College

  • Marie Curtis Park Tree Fest

Volunteers are needed for all of FOSS’s events. If you are interested in helping and/or becoming a member of FOSS, please refer to our web page.
