Today the Friends of Sam Smith Park collaborated with Green Toronto to replant the eastern edge of the Large Bowl along with other community partners. It had been largely "cleared out" in years past, reducing natural cover and food for migrating birds; these edges provide a natural green corridor rich in food sources as they migrate each spring and fall.
The event was well-coordinated, safe, distanced and pre-registered participants underwent COVID screening. The native plants (ninebark, dogwood, witch hazel etc) had been laid out, shovels, gloves and mulch supplied and we received instruction on tree-planting procedures. The actual planting didn't take very long with that line of physically-distanced, enthusiastic volunteers. Thanks to Green Toronto for making it all happen! September 26, 2021.
